I, Us,and Now:

According to Harvard Professor Marshall Ganz, stories of “self”, of “us” and of “now” teach us not only about organisational visions of value but can also inspire us to transform data into decisions to adhere, to purchase, and to act.

In our module, “I, Us, and Now”, at the BAI/ZHAW Summer School on AI in Banking and Finance, we explore the current and future data science roles in Open Finance, asking three industry thought leaders, Gavin Littlejohn, The Chairman of FDGlobal Data, Andries Smit, Founder and CEO of Upside and Nigel Verdon, Founder and CEO of Railsbank to tell their stories of how data science underpins their organisation's service offering. Let’s explore which customer questions these stories address, what are the objectives and project outcomes of this exercise – and the lessons to be learned.

Business storytelling is the practice of building a narrative around data sets to help convey the meaning of the data in an insightful and compelling fashion. Steve Denning and Paul Smith, among others, would argue that four foundational questions provide the structure around which a powerful vision of Open Finance can be built:

1)    What business problem(s) is/are your organisation trying to solve using data science?
2)    Which experiences, skills, and competencies does your team bring to the table?
3)    When addressing your customer’s challenges, which products, processes or networks will provide the road forward?
4)    Finally, which key success factors and which metrics will be used by your stakeholders to evaluate the Happy End?
